All in one

The 2009 Lexus LX570 flagship luxury SUV is available in one, generously equipped model. In addition, Canadians may choose from two available packages – the Premium Package and Ultra Premium Package – to equip their LX570 with additional comfort, convenience and style features.

Overwhelming performance

“Overwhelming”: There’s no better word to describe the performance of the 2009 LX570. With a powerful 5.7-litre V8 specially tuned to the unique demands of the LX, coupled with a six-speed automatic super electronically controlled transmission (Super ECT) with overdrive, this full-size Lexus SUV delivers an unparalleled, powerful driving sensation that’s stress-free, even on rough roads, and an exciting off-road experience.

But while its raw power – up to 383HP – is impressive, the LX570 features technology such as Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence to deliver greater torque on demand and more efficient power. The result is big performance where it counts – including up to 403 lb-ft of torque and an 8,500 pound towing capacity for hauling large trailers or boats with ease.

Handling and control

Performance sets the LX570 apart, thanks to impressive suspension, handling and steering qualities. The LX570 features full-time four-wheel-drive to deliver maximum driving confidence in a variety of weather and road conditions, plus the handling and control benefits of the Lexus Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) technologies. To prevent roll-back, the LX570 sports Hill Start Assist Control (HAC), while downhill driving is kept smooth and comfortable via Downhill Assist Control (DAC).

The 4WD system is further enhanced with the Lexus Crawl Control system, which enables driving at a constant, super-slow speed to safely navigate gravel, mogul-covered roads, or other unstable surfaces. Meanwhile, the limited slip differential adopted for the 4WD’s centre differential has been carefully specified to boost steering stability and traction performance.

The LX570’s front suspension features a double-wishbone design fitted with lower torsion bars, while the rear suspension is a four-link style with live axle. These are further enhanced by Active Height Control (AHC) and Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) systems to deliver stable driving performance wherever the LX570 goes – in town, on the highway, or off-road.

Progressive rate Variable Gear Ratio (VGRS) rack and pinion power steering delivers new levels of sensitivity across a wide range of speeds and over a variety of surface conditions. Add it up, and the 2009 LX570 truly merits its place of honour as the flagship Lexus SUV.

The majestic presence of the 2009 LX570 is built on a solid and highly functional foundation. A broad, sure-footed stance is projected via P285/60R18 Mud and Snow tires, with available 20” wheels on upgraded trim levels. And because the LX570 is well-equipped for travel across any surface, all models include a full-size spare tire.

Active and passive safety systems

The 2009 Lexus LX570 seats up to eight adults in luxurious comfort. But it also incorporates many active and passive safety systems to help protect the driver, passengers – and even those around the vehicle.

The LX570 is the first SUV to benefit from the Adaptive Front Lighting System, which refocuses the lamps to illuminate more of the road ahead when the vehicle enters a curve. Fog lamps are also standard equipment, to provide better lighting in low visibility conditions. When backing up, drivers will appreciate the exterior mirrors that automatically tilt when the LX570 is put into reverse, providing better visibility behind the vehicle.

Inside the LX570, standard safety systems include 10 airbags: Dual-stage driver and front passenger airbags, dual-stage driver and front passenger knee airbags, front seat mounted side airbags, middle row outboard seat side airbags, and roll-sensing front and rear / side curtain airbags. Three-point lap and shoulder seatbelts are fitted in all eight passenger positions, and include adjustable “B” pillar shoulder belt anchors and front seatbelt pre-tensioners and force limiters. Younger passengers are protected with anchor points for child restraint seats, and child protector rear door locks. All models are equipped with an anti-theft system and an engine immobilizer. The LX570 even includes a first aid kit and tool kit.

Comfort and versatility

Inside, the 2009 Lexus LX570 is vast yet welcoming, overflowing with a sense of quality and comfort in keeping with the Lexus Spirit of Hospitality that is the perfect match for a flagship luxury SUV.

2009 Lexus LX570 – Technical information

Engine: 5.7L V8

Horsepower: Up to 383 HP @ 5,600 RPM

Torque: Up to 403 lb-ft @ 3,600 RPM

Features: Crank hold electric starter control; Dual overhead cams; 32 valves; Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence; Sequential multi-port electronic fuel injection; Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence; Acoustic control induction system.

Emissions rating: Tier 2, Bin 5.

Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence

Dual VVT-i is a Lexus engine system that independently varies the intake and exhaust valve timing on a continual basis to deliver optimal valve timing for a full range of driving conditions. It improves drivability, performance and fuel efficiency, and reduces emissions.

Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i)

The principle behind ETCS-i – sometimes called “drive-by-wire” – is used on all modern racing cars. When the driver depresses the accelerator, the engine instantaneously receives an electronic signal demanding more power. By replacing the traditional, less-efficient cable link between pedal and engine, ETCS-i can provide better fuel efficiency, faster response and smoother acceleration. It also networks with the engine’s computer to co-ordinate with other control systems, as appropriate.

Acoustic Control Induction System

ACIS increases the amount of air entering the engine by optimizing the length of the intake manifold under various driving conditions. The result is an increase in engine power and torque whenever the driver needs it most.

Transmission: 6-speed automatic Super ECT

Features: Console-mounted shift lever; Sequential shift mode; Overdrive; Lock-up torque converter; Transmission cooler; Automatic transmission fluid warmer.

Fuel efficiency: 17.1L/100km city; 11.4L/100km highway.

Super Electronically Controlled Transmission (Super ECT)

Electronic control of Lexus automatic transmissions has delivered several breakthroughs in driving comfort and vehicle efficiency. Super ECT helps to ensure optimal gear change timing according to throttle position and vehicle load for maximum performance and fuel efficiency. It also networks with the engine’s computer to co-ordinate with other control systems, as appropriate.

Capabilities

Seating capacity: 8 adults

Cargo capacity: Behind front seats – 2.56m3 (90.4ft3); Behind 3rd row seat – 0.43m3 (15.5ft3)

Towing capacity: 3,856 KG (8,500 LBS)

Active Height Control

This electric/hydraulic adjustable suspension increases wheel articulation off-road and helps provide better control on-road. It does this by helping to minimize pitch and sway angles, and by allowing each wheel to reach independently to differences in surface height, to give the vehicle a more secure foundation when driving on any surface.

Adaptive Variable Suspension

This suspension system allows the vehicle to raise or lower itself quickly, depending on need. For example, when the vehicle stops the chassis lowers two inches for easier loading an unloading. When driving at highway speeds the chassis lowers one inch at the front and one-half inch at the rear for improved stability; and when the vehicle’s four-wheel drive system is shifted into the low range, the vehicle rises three inches for better ground clearance.

Crawl Control

Crawl Control adapts to rugged conditions by maintaining a low – or “walking” – vehicle speed. By automatically controlling the engine and brake force, the system helps to minimize tire slipping, pitching or bouncing over rocks and allows the driver to more fully concentrate on steering. This helps enhance control and diminishes the chance of bottoming the chassis on any surface.

Vehicle Stability Control

The Lexus Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system is an active safety system that automatically helps to control a vehicle when it starts to slide – for example, when trying to turn at too high a speed. VSC compares driver braking and steering commands to the vehicle’s actual performance then activates individual brakes as needed and adjusts the throttle setting to help maintain stability and keep the vehicle on course.

Active Traction Control

A version of the Lexus Traction Control system designed specifically for 4WD models, Active Traction Control (A-TRAC) helps the vehicle maintain traction when accelerating in slippery conditions. It also engages when the available grip differs from one side of the vehicle to the other, such as when two wheels are on a gravel or grass verge. When drive wheels begin to slip, A-TRAC automatically adjusts engine power to keep the wheels from losing traction.

Hill Start Assist Control

Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) system works to minimize back-rolling when stopped on an uphill grade.

Downhill Assist Control

At speeds of 5-25 km/h, pressing the Downhill Assist Control (DAC) button activates a series of sensors which monitor wheel speed and, in turn, make necessary adjustments to keep helps control the vehicle during steep descents.

Multi-Terrain Antilock Braking System

A specially-tuned edition of the Lexus Antilock Braking System (ABS), Multi-Terrain ABS uses sensors to monitor speed, traction, vehicle load and the driver’s applied brake force. The system then controls brake applications to minimize wheel lock-up, reducing the chance of the vehicle skidding. The result is shorter stopping distances when hard braking on wet, gravely, sandy or other surfaces where traction is questionable.

Brake Assist

The Lexus Brake Assist (BA) system is a system designed to assist the driver during emergency braking by supplementing the braking power applied if the driver has not pushed hard enough on the pedal in an emergency braking situation. It works in conjunction with ABS to minimize lock-up during emergency situations.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution

The Lexus Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) system minimizes stopping distances by maximizing the braking power applied to those wheels that have the best grip. This system also automatically adjusts the fore/aft brake balance according to vehicle load, and the right/left brake balance if brakes are applied during cornering.

Auto Levelling Headlamp System

For safer night driving, the Lexus Auto Levelling Headlamp System adjusts the lights to a pre-set height. This allows for better road illumination without blinding oncoming traffic.

Adaptive Front Lighting System

The Lexus Adaptive Front Lighting System pivots the driver-side headlamp up to 15 degrees to the left and the passenger-side headlamp up to five degrees to the right to help illuminate the road through turns.

Wide View Front and Side Monitor System

(Premium Package; Ultra Premium Package)

To help minimize the risk of collisions at blind crossings, a small camera on the grille provides a split-screen image of more than 18 metres (59 feet) to the left and right. To assist with parking, a camera on the passenger side-view mirror provides an overhead view of the area to the right of the vehicle.

Back-up camera

A small camera discretely located at the rear of the vehicle provides a wide-angled view behind the vehicle whenever the vehicle is placed in reverse.

Intuitive Parking Assist

(Premium Package; Ultra Premium Package)

Multiple ultrasonic sensors on the front and rear detect how close the vehicle is to surrounding objects. When activated, the system alerts the driver if an object is in proximity. Distance is indicated by an LCD display, accompanied by an audible beep. The closer the vehicle is to the object, the fewer lines appear on the display and the more frequent the beeping becomes.

Lexus Pre-Collision System

(Ultra Premium Package)

A front-mounted millimeter-wave radar system detects if a collision is imminent. The vehicle then prepares for this by retracting the front seatbelts, prepping the Brake Assist system to deliver increased braking pressure when the driver steps on the brake pedal, and stiffening the suspension system to prevent the front end from diving prior to impact.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

(Ultra Premium Package)

A cruise-control system that can automatically adjust vehicle speed in order to help maintain a pre-set distance between the Lexus vehicle and the vehicle traveling in front. Dynamic Radar Cruise Control uses millimeter-wave radar to help maintain this distance. If traffic slows, the throttle is automatically reduced and brakes are applied. Once the road clears, the vehicle returns to its pre-set speed.
