Lexus to Reveal New NX Luxury Compact SUV At Beijing Motor Show

  • Lexus entry in Luxury Compact SUV segment
  • Edgy and striking design
  • Available with two powertrains: full hybrid NX 300h, and gasoline turbo NX 200t

(TORONTO, ON – April 10, 2014)  Lexus has released the first photographs of its all-new, sharply styled luxury compact SUV to be launched on April 20th at the 2014 Beijing International Auto Show.

The NX, Lexus’ first entry into the luxury compact SUV segment, has been conceived as an edgy, emotional design aimed at appealing to new customers with its striking design and advanced technologies, the NX will set a new standard for future Lexus models.

Two LF-NX concept vehicles introduced at the 2013 Frankfurt and Tokyo Motor Shows received acclaim and substantially influenced the final design of the production NX.

Exterior design
The NX has been designed to provide a feeling of agility not usually associated with an SUV. It embodies an aggressive form in order to make functionality and performance with no compromise.

The front and rear flares are fused to the solid body that starts at the spindle grille. It is intended to look nimble with incredible power concentrated inside. The bold flared wheel arches housing 17 or 18-inch wheels provide a crouching, muscular stance. Innovative LED headlamps and daytime running lamps firmly express Lexus’ bold symbolism.

The side profile is accentuated by a roofline peak set towards the back of the vehicle to provide ample head-room for rear seat occupants and create a tight silhouette.

An innovative outer mirror and a world-first door handle mechanism (with a hidden key barrel and integrated lighting) add to the luxury appearance.

The rear is punctuated by Lexus’ signature ‘L’ shape combination lamps, each with seamless LED lighting, while the bodywork echoes the spindle grille design at the front.

Interior design
The interior of the NX brings a sense of excitement to the cabin atmosphere. The core idea was to combine the structural beauty of a high-performance machine with a material feel that maximizes functionality.

The centre silver frame is strongly embedded into the instrument panel to symbolize the strength of the SUV vehicle. Knee pads located on both sides firmly support the driver and passenger. The intuitive interaction with human machine Interface (HMI) technology is located between the front seats and creates an advanced impression. The NX continues Lexus’ display and operation zone concept.

Interior space played a significant role in the cabin design, and seating was a major focus. The NX possesses the lowest hip point in the segment adding to the connection of the driver to the vehicle and increasing overall head room. The NX has the longest luggage load length and offers wide front to rear couple distance.

The tough metallic feel of the dynamic frame and the materials wrapped around it provide contrasting textures in tautness and softness. The combination creates a unique atmosphere.

Technology
The NX introduces a highly efficient hybrid in NX 300h, and an innovative all-new 2.0-litre gasoline turbo in NX 200t.

The NX has an array of innovative on-board technology, including a Lexus-first Wireless Charging Tray for portable devices, the first application of a new Lexus Remote Touch Interface with a touch pad, and a comprehensive Multi-information Display, including a Lexus-first G sensor and boost meter, Heads-Up Display, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert.

Chief engineer Takeaki Kato said the NX was developed as a vehicle that suits an urban lifestyle.

Much like high quality sports watches, bikes and fashion, the NX represents the ultimate in combining functionality and utility with design.

“Throughout all development phases we were determined to approach the NX from the perspective of young, urban, luxury drivers.”
