The 2009 Lexus LS460 and long-wheelbase edition LS460L exhibit performance without equal, as befitting the most sophisticated luxury sedan in the world. At its heart is a 4.6L V8 that’s unlike any eight-cylinder engine created for a passenger car. Lexus engineers devoted special care and attention to every aspect of its design to draw maximum performance and efficiency while minimizing noise and vibration. This remarkable engine features key moving parts that have been polished to a mirror finish to minimize friction, and every engine is checked by a master machinist, who uses a stethoscope to search for minute yet abnormal noises and ensure that each engine is properly balanced.

A craftsman-designed engine demands an equally special transmission, which is why the LSseries boasts the world’s first eight-speed automatic transmission. This super electronically controlled transmission enables rapid acceleration, smooth shifts and impressive fuel efficiency.

Uncompromised handling and control

The 2009 LS460 and LS460L deliver awe-inspiring performance, but do so under perfect control. New for this model year, both models are now available in all-wheel-drive editions for additional driving confidence on a wide range of surfaces in many weather conditions.

Rear-wheel-drive models feature lightweight yet highly responsive electric power steering, while all-wheel-drive models enhance this system with variable gear ratio steering technology for even greater control in extreme driving conditions. The state of the art Lexus Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) system is standard fitted to all LS models, and backstopped by Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) and Traction Control (TRAC) technologies.

All LSseries models are equipped with an independent multi-link front suspension featuring a stabilizer bar, and anti-vibration subframe. The rear suspension is similar, with low-pressure shocks, while the front suspension also benefits from carefully engineered anti-dive and anti-squat geometry. The all-wheel-drive LS models are further enhanced with an Adaptive Variable Air Suspension (AVS), front and rear.

Ground-breaking active and passive safety systems

LSseries drivers demand an extensive suite of active and passive safety systems to protect them and their passengers – and in this flagship sedan, Lexus delivers its most sophisticated safety package to date. In addition to VDIM, VSC, TRAC and other active handling and control design decisions, the LSseries features a direct tire-pressure monitoring system and a generous complement of braking technologies. Disc brakes are fitted at all four corners, including larger diameter discs on the front wheels. These are engaged via an Electronically Controlled Brake System (ECB) and enhanced with Antilock Braking System (ABS), Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) as standard equipment. The LS460 also features an electric parking brake.

Inside, the LS460 wraps occupants in luxury, comfort… and safety. Standard safety systems on the regular-length wheelbase models include a cocoon of eight airbags – including driver and front passenger airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, front seat mounted side airbags, and front and rear side/curtain airbags. Long-wheelbase models add rear seat side airbags for a total of 10, while the LS460L AWD fitted with the Executive Package adds an 11^th airbag that’s also an industry-first – a submarine prevention airbag built into the Ottoman.

Three-point lap and shoulder belts are fitted in all positions, and include power adjustable “B” pillar shoulder belt anchors plus front and rear seat pre-tensioners and force limiters.

Available upgrade packages include additional safety items, such as clearance and backup sensors, back-up cameras for those models not already fitted with one as standard, the Lexus Advanced Parking Guidance System that makes parallel parking safer and easy, and a cruise control system that uses millimetre-wave radar to maintain safe cruising distances. An LS460 fitted with the available Lexus Pre-Collision System can even detect obstacles in its path, determine whether an accident is imminent, and take measures to minimize potential injury to occupants.

Variable Valve Timing with intelligence, electrically-driven intake cam

Unique to Lexus, VVT-iE provides the ideal air-fuel mixture for efficient combustion and optimum performance over a broad range of engine speeds. It increases torque at lower speeds and horsepower at higher speeds to improve engine performance and fuel economy, as well as help reduce emissions. The Engine Control Module receives data from a variety of sensors and signals the actuator to adjust the camshaft the amount needed to create perfect timing for engine speed and load at that exact moment. The exhaust cam is controlled by Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), a Lexus engine system that continually varies the exhaust valve timing to deliver optimal valve timing for a full range of driving conditions. It improves drivability, performance and fuel efficiency, and reduces emissions.

Electronic Throttle Control System with intelligence (ETCS-i)

The principle behind ETCS-i – sometimes called “drive-by-wire” – is used on all modern racing cars. When the driver depresses the accelerator, the engine instantaneously receives an electronic signal demanding more power. By replacing the traditional, less-efficient cable link between pedal and engine, ETCS-i can provide better fuel efficiency, faster response and smoother acceleration. It also networks with the engine’s computer to co-ordinate with other control systems, as appropriate.

Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management

Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management (VDIM) is the most sophisticated handling and control system Lexus offers. Specially tuned for each vehicle on which it’s fitted, VDIM uses information from computer-linked sensors to compare actual vehicle performance to driver commands. In this way, it’s able to anticipate potential vehicle stability problems such as a skid or slide. VDIM then makes subtle interventions through a combination of braking, throttle, and steering – in most cases, invisible to the driver – to maximize control.

Vehicle Stability Control

(All models)

The Lexus Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) system is an active safety system that automatically helps to control a vehicle when it starts to slide – for example, when trying to turn at too high a speed. VSC compares driver braking and steering commands to the vehicle’s actual performance then activates individual brakes as needed and adjusts the throttle setting to help maintain stability and keep the vehicle on course.

Traction Control

(All models)

The Lexus Traction Control (TRAC) system helps the vehicle maintain traction when accelerating in slippery conditions. It also engages when the available grip differs from one side of the vehicle to the other, such as when two wheels are on a gravel or grass verge. When drive wheels begin to slip, TRAC automatically adjusts engine power to keep the wheels from losing traction.

Adaptive Variable Suspension

(LS460 AWD; LS460L AWD)

This suspension system allows the vehicle to raise or lower itself quickly, depending on need. For example, when the vehicle stops the chassis lowers two inches for easier loading and unloading. When driving at highway speeds the chassis lowers one inch at the front and one-half inch at the rear for improved stability; and when the vehicle’s four-wheel drive system is shifted into the low range, the vehicle rises three inches for better ground clearance.

Antilock Braking System

(All models)

The Lexus Antilock Braking System (ABS) uses sensors to monitor speed, traction, vehicle load and the driver’s applied brake force. The ABS then controls brake applications to minimize wheel lock-up, reducing the chance of the vehicle skidding. The result is shorter stopping distances on wet, gravel-covered, sandy or other surfaces where traction is questionable.

Brake Assist

(All models)

The Lexus Brake Assist (BA) system is a system designed to assist the driver during emergency braking by supplementing the braking power applied if the driver has not pushed hard enough on the pedal in an emergency braking situation. It works in conjunction with ABS to minimize lock-up during emergency situations.

Electronic Brake Force Distribution

(All models)

The Lexus Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) system minimizes stopping distances by maximizing the braking power applied to those wheels that have the best grip. This system also automatically adjusts the fore/aft brake balance according to vehicle load, and the right/left brake balance if brakes are applied during cornering.

High-Intensity Discharge Headlamps

(All models)

Powered by a Xenon gas bulb, these projector-beam HID headlamps use less power, last significantly longer and provide considerably more illumination than halogen bulbs.

Adaptive Front Lighting System

(All models)

The Lexus Adaptive Front Lighting System pivots the driver-side headlamp up to 15 degrees to the left and the passenger-side headlamp up to five degrees to the right to help illuminate the road through turns.

Auto Levelling Headlamp System

(All models)

For safer night driving, the Lexus Auto Levelling Headlamp System adjusts the lights to a pre-set height. This allows for better road illumination without blinding oncoming traffic.

Advanced Parking Guidance System

This system greatly simplifies parking, and works for both parallel and angle parking situations. The driver pulls up to a parking space and at the press of a button, the vehicle determines whether it will fit, and then parks itself. The driver controls the speed using the brake pedal, while the car steers itself into place.

Pre-Collision System

Using a milliwave radar sensor, this revolutionary pre-collision system senses an impending collision and automatically initiates steps to reduce the potential for injuries. Vastly superior to previous systems, it features several Lexus breakthroughs, including an Advanced Obstacle Detection System, Emergency Steering Assist, Lane-Keeping Assist and a Driver Monitoring System. Information from the milliwave radar sensor is combined with computer data on vehicle speed, steering angle and yaw rate. If the system determines that a collision is unavoidable the following actions are initiated:

The pre-collision seatbelt motor preemptively retracts the driver and front passenger seatbelts.

The Brake Assist system is placed in stand-by mode, priming the system to deliver the necessary braking force as soon as the brake is applied.

The suspension stiffens to minimize nosedive and prevent unloading of the rear wheels to maximize braking.

The Emergency Steering Assist and Lane-Keeping Assist systems are triggered to help the driver maintain control of the vehicle.
