TORONTO, Ontario (January 5th, 2024) – When you’re ready for adventure, the all-new and highly anticipated 2024 Lexus GX 550 is ready for you. The newest generation of this popular mid-size luxury SUV offers Canadian Guests an unparalleled combination of go-anywhere capability, elegant features, sophisticated styling, and luxurious quality.
“For 2024, Lexus designers and engineers have reimagined the GX from the ground up to inspire our Guests to pursue their urge to travel, explore beyond the pavement, and revel in the joy of driving and discovery,” said Martin Gilbert, Director of Lexus Canada. “We’ve enhanced the off-road prowess that GX enthusiasts value, while adding the best of Lexus technologies and thoughtful interior touches. This is the new GX our Guests have been waiting for – and now, the wait is over.”
The GX has always been about performance – and for 2024, Lexus engineers have achieved significant gains over the previous generation. The 3.4 litre twin-turbo V6 features active noise control and delivers a big boost in power over the engine it replaces. Horsepower is up by 48 to 349 peak horsepower, while peak torque is 479 lb-ft, up by 150. This powertrain is mated to a 10-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission with paddle shifters and full-time four-wheel-drive. This engine’s twin-turbochargers deliver steady and consistent acceleration for improved control over power delivery in both on-road and off-road situations, with improved fuel efficiency of 15.3 / 11.2 / 13.5 L/100 km (City/Highway/Combined).
Other features include Active Noise Control, Drive Mode and a Torsen limited slip locking centre differential. All models are factory equipped with a trailer ball and tow hitch, trailer brake controller, and trailer sway control. The towing capacity on most models gets a 2,500 lb boost to over 9,000 lbs.
The new GX rides on the same Lexus GA-F platform introduced on the current generation LX 600. This increases body rigidity and improves on-road handling – two key elements of the Lexus Driving Signature. The GA-F is engineered to withstand twisty off-road forces, maximize suspension performance, create stable wheel articulation, and deliver more consistent tire contact – all while maintaining in-cabin stability. This improved frame also provides a reliable foundation on which Guests may add accessories and gear such as rooftop tents and recovery kits.
The 2024 GX features a newly developed double-wishbone front suspension plus multilink rear suspension to deliver impressive performance – off or on the road. An electronic power steering system provides the driver with superior steering feel for optimal control.
The new GX introduces a rugged yet refined new body style that expresses this model’s authentic off-road functionality. The 2024 GX features a square-body profile with horizontal design motif, a grounded, stable stance with wide track and fender flares, and improved ground clearance. To overcome off-road obstacles, the GX is designed with 26-degree approach, 24-degree breakover, and 21-degree departure angles. Notable standard features include auto-levelling, triple-beam premium LED headlamps with washers, LED tail lamps, the Lexus signature unified L-shaped light bar and updated Lexus logo, running boards, roof rails, and rear spoiler. For the first time, the GX is fitted with a power rear lift door as standard, including a flip-up rear hatch. Overtrail and Overtrail+ grades are available in exclusive two-tone paint schemes featuring black roofs.
Inside, the GX welcomes Guests to a cabin that juxtaposes its tough exterior with a calming, luxurious, and modern interior space. A new horizontal instrument panel design is lower and carries into the dash to provide excellent front and side visibility for driver and co-pilot. Lexus designers retained physical dials for frequently-used controls such as climate control and audio volume, while all available off-road controls are concentrated near the gear shifter to help minimize potential driver distraction. Seating for five, six, or seven adults (depending on grade) is enhanced with thoughtful touches at every turn – then finished in black or a choice of available grade-specific earth tones designed to complement the natural world just outside the vehicle’s doors. Designers also included more storage space than in the previous generation – from the larger centre console and door pockets to expanded cargo capacity in all cabin configurations.
Every 2024 GX is impressively equipped with advanced yet intuitive technology features, headlined by the Lexus Interface. This wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto-compatible multimedia and connectivity system features a 14-inch touchscreen display, Bluetooth connectivity, and Sirius XM Satellite compatibility. The Lexus Interface incorporates a natural language virtual assistant that enables a voice-first approach to navigation, media, communication, and other vehicle features. In addition, all Lexus Interface connected services may be controlled from a smart phone equipped with the Lexus App. Other standard features include a 12.3-inch multi-information display, a wireless charging dock for smartphones, and illuminated USB charging ports through the cabin.
As a Lexus, every GX 550 also features state of the art safety systems – starting with Lexus Safety System+ 3.0, an integrated suite of active safety equipment and convenience features.
Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection – Designed to help detect a vehicle, pedestrian, or cyclist and provide an audio/visual forward collision warning under certain circumstances. If the driver does not react, the system is designed to provide automatic emergency braking at speeds between approximately 10-180 km/h. PCS uses a camera and millimeter-wave radar for enhanced performance and reliability.
Risk Avoidance Emergency Steer Assist – Helps support collision avoidance with certain detectable objects within the lane by applying gentle braking and steering operation under certain daytime conditions.
Left Turn Oncoming Vehicle Detection/Braking – Designed to provide a warning and automatic braking if the system determines a driver is turning left in front of an oncoming vehicle in certain daytime conditions.
All-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (DRCC) – An adaptive cruise control system intended for highway use that uses radar and camera technology to help keep the vehicle at a preset speed and distance from vehicles ahead, even in stop-and-go traffic. If the system detects the vehicle getting closer than the preset distance, it is designed to automatically slow the vehicle — even to a complete stop. At highway speeds, when the road ahead clears, the vehicle returns to its preset speed.
Lane Tracing Assist (LTA) – When DRCC is enabled and lane markers are detected, LTA uses the lines on the road and/or preceding vehicles to provide active driving assistance and help keep the vehicle centered in its lane.
Emergency Driving Stop System (EDSS) – If the system detects no driver input for some time, audible warnings will alert the driver. If no further inputs are detected, EDSS brings the vehicle to a gradual stop while keeping it safely in lane and hazard lights are activated to warn other road users. EDSS only operates when driving on expressways with DRCC and LTA activated.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist (LDA w/SA) – When white/yellow lane markings or certain road edge boundary lines are detected at speeds above 50 km/h, LDA w/SA is designed to issue an audio/visual lane departure warning if an inadvertent lane departure is detected. If the driver does not take corrective action, the system is also designed to provide gentle corrective steering for lane keeping assistance.
Road Sign Assist (RSA) – Using an intelligent camera, RSA is designed to detect speed limit signs, stop signs, Do Not Enter signs, yield signs and certain warning signs, and display an icon of the sign on the Multi-Information Display (MID).
Proactive Driving Assist (PDA) – When system operating conditions are met, using the vehicle’s camera and radar, PDA provides gentle braking into curves or gentle braking and/or steering to help support driving tasks such as distance control between the vehicle and a preceding vehicle, pedestrian, or bicyclist.
Other standard safety features on all models include a backup camera with back guide monitor, a rear camera washer, the Blind Spot Monitor system with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, 10 airbags, Intuitive Parking Assist with Auto Braking, the Rear Seat Reminder system, and a tire pressure monitoring system with auto location.
